Rhyme • A correspondence between two words that have a similar sound. “Two words that sound the same.” Examples: high and sigh, fail and sail, sneer and peer, cry and fry, seat and meat
Perfect Rhyme • A rhyme where two or more words begin with different consonant sounds, then have the exact same stressed vowel sounds. Any other following sounds are also the same. Perfect rhymes may or may not be spelled the same way, but they do not have to be. Examples: rink and wink, gratitude and latitude.
Slant Rhyme Rhyme where two words share just the vowel sound (assonance) or share just the consonant sound (consonance). Slant rhymes do not have to be spelled in different ways. Assonance Examples: heart and star, body and camaraderie Consonance Examples: ill and well, all and soul, felt, quilt Slant rhymes can be made by taking a two-syllable word and manipulating it so that one of the syllables no longer rhymes. Examples: rumor and consumer, wonder and daughter, easily and definitely, heart and starving.
