Honda Integra Type R Uses AWD and a Turbo to Put Down Savage Power

Want to build a monster Honda Integra Type R DC5? Add a forged engine, a turbo and a Honda CR-V drivetrain.

The Integra Type R is an iconic car in the Honda lineup. However here in America we never officially got the DC5 version of the Integra Type R. So, if you want one, you are going to need to scour the classifieds or import one yourself. We did get the Acura RSX Type-S which is a great car in its own right. +

However, if only something wearing the Type R badge will satisfy you then you need the Integra. The car featured here resides in the UK. It is a wonderful example as it is. But even iconic cars such as these are fair game to tuners and open for modification.

This car is getting a lot more than a cold air intake and a cat-back exhaust. This is going to be a big build. Officially Gassed introduces the plans for the car on their YouTube channel. They are not messing about. They are taking the car to renowned performance and tuning specialists Auto Torque.

The folks at Auto Torque work on super cars such as the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan. However, they cut their teeth on Japanese performance cars. So, the Honda Integra Type R is right in their wheelhouse.

This Type R was already a work in progress, and not all stock. A large Precision 6262 turbo was fitted and could make big boost. However, because it was still a stock engine, the boost was turned down.

And by the time the big turbo spooled up, it was time to shift gears. So, a smaller turbo was fitted, but there are a lot more changes planned.

The biggest change is an entirely different drivetrain. This will no longer be a front wheel drive wonder. This is going to be an all-wheel drive monster. But before we get to the drivetrain we have to talk about the powertrain. Up front is a new bottom-built forged engine.

This beauty should be able to handle more power much more easily than the stock unit. That is going to be hooked up to a Honda CR-V. Well not an actual CR-V but most of the bits are coming from a CR-V donor.

The gearbox, transfer case, and subframe were all lifted from a CR-V. The rear differential and rear drive shafts are also from the popular Honda sport ute. One thing not from the CR-V is the fuel cell and pumps that will be installed in the Integra Type R. All of these parts and bits are nicely laid out on the shop floor under the car so you can visualize where they will go.

The fun part of course will be fabricating everything, so they fit and work properly. This is not a straightforward engine swap. This is going to be a serious undertaking. However, at the end of the day, this is going to be a spectacular one-of-a-kind Integra Type R build. Let us know what you think of this build in the Honda-Tech forums.
