73-year-old Cape Coral man dies in 5-vehicle crash on Midpoint Bridge

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A 73-year-old man died in a five-vehicle crash on Midpoint Memorial Bridge Friday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the 73-year-old’s pickup truck was traveling in front of another pickup truck, driven by a 57-year-old Cape Coral man. The third and fourth vehicles involved were traveling in front of the 73-year-old man’s pickup truck.

The fifth vehicle was traveling east in the outside lane behind the vehicle driven by the 57-year-old man.

FHP said the 57-year-old’s truck collided with the rear of the 73-year-old’s truck, causing a chain reaction between the 73-year-old’s pickup truck and the third and fourth vehicles.

According to the report, the 57-year-old man then veered into the path of the fifth vehicle. The front of the fifth vehicle collided with the rear of the man’s truck.

The 73-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene, according to FHP. The 57-year-old man and the driver of the third vehicle, a 38-year-old man, suffered minor injuries, according to the report.

No other injuries were reported from the crash, and FHP said the crash remains under investigation.

UPDATE 3:00 p.m.:

The Mid Point Bridge has resumed normal traffic flow. An investigation into the cause of the fatal accident is still underway.

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is presently on the scene of a fatal three car accident on the Mid Point Bridge.

There have been reports of extensive traffic delays heading eastbound. Drivers are asked to seek an alternate route.
